Information System For Competitive Advantages

Information Technology (IT) is in line with technological changes that helped businesses to reshape output of products, services and information that are provided to customers to build value to its customers. While, according to Harvard Business Review (1985), it is stated that information can provide a competitive advantage by giving companies new ways to outperform their competitors and spawns new businesses, often from within the company's existing operations.

Furthermore, human resource operations is considered as a benefits of HRIS, Ngai & Wat (2004). Besides that, there are five competitive forces which are, rivalry within an existing industry, threats of new entrants,Shin (2001). substitution products, and bargaining power of the customers and suppliers. Whereas, Porter (2001) justifies even there is a change in terms of suppliers, channels, substitutes or even competitors but still the competitive forces determines the profitability.

Here, i would like to give brief example of the business that are related to those competitive forces which is Al-Ikhsan Sports and Royal Sporting House which is selling sports goods. One thing that i can say is Al-Ikhsan would gain competitive advantage because in terms of prices people tend to choose Al-Ikhsan as a substitutes because on price differences. Other than that, Al-Ikhsan has variety of sports products rather than Royal Sporting House and in terms on suppliers Al-Ikhsan has more choices of sports brand compared to Royal Sporting House which only sell the selected brand items.

As a result, there are competitive strategies that would help to retain the businesses alive. The strategies are as such, cost leadership, differentiation strategy, innovation strategy, growth strategy and alliance strategy. For instance, alliance strategy in other word merging. Google and Motorola merge to compete with Apple in a telecommunication world. In summary, any business that would attain competitive advantage it is possible to follow on the five competitive strategies.

Introduction To Information System

As for my first entry, I would like to reflect on the topics that I learned during 2nd week of the semester. The topic was “Introduction to Information System”. Information system  has a very wide meaning. Information System is a processing system unit that is used for data processing in an organization, for communication purposes among departments through the entire organization and also for distribution of information, Vladimir Zwass (2013). Besides that, Margaret & Caroline (2005) stated the information systesm (IS) would help organizations in organizing and managing in order to achieve competitiveness in a particular sector. Yet, this (Information system) will change according to the latest availability of technology in the market.

Relating the information system with human resources or Human Resource Information System (HRIS), can be defined as a system that is integrated to gain information and analyse the human resources of an organization. This system shall be useful for the Human Resources manager to keep on track of their staff progress. Besides that, the system helps the managers to retrieve the individual information needed such as the development of employees Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (K.S.A) from time to time. Nevertheless, according to Michael.J Karanagh. et all (2007) information system can be a medium to evaluate the employees working performances which is timely, accurate, concise, relevant and complete. As a result of it, the system enhances accuracy of decision making process that lead to effective operations of businesses.

There are various information systems that has become apart from our daily life. For instance, nowadays as a modern people we tend to get news updates within a second by browsing to the internet through search engines such as "Google". Nevertheless, we shall not only get access to local news but world news, sports updates, entertainments and many more just by clicking on the internet.

As a conclusion, i think information system shall help the managers to access the information needed about employees and indeed information system is a medium for organisations to be more efficient in a business world.

Self Description

Assalamualaikum and Hello Dear Visitors,

First of all thanks for visiting my educational blog. Before I start posting the posts regarding Human Resources Information System (HRIS), it would be glad that I share my personal background to beloved readers of the blog that visits to this blog.

My name is Muhammad Faizal Bin Ahamed Bahurdeen, Im originated from the Northern Region of Peninsular Malaysia, Penang or also known as Prince of Wales Island. Currently, I further my studies in University Technology Malaysia. I enrolled for the undergraduate course of Human Resource Development, University Technology Malaysia, Johor Bahru. Previously, before I came to Johor, I completed my Diploma in Business Studies at KDU College, Penang.

In personal, my hobbies are collecting old currency notes and coins from all over the world and the other hobby that i really enjoy is chatting because from chatting i can make new friends and share useful knowledge and information even just via virtual world.

As compared to other guys whom can be said as a gameaholic but for myself I don’t know how to play games as like other guys because I doesn't have interest on it. Nevertheless, I’m active on social activities by lending hand to help those needy people by providing foods, cloths and etc. as what I’m afford to do so. I realised from this kind of activities we should be grateful of what we have and living without any deficiency in the family. Besides that, I also like to discover new places with my close friend here in UTM using motorcycle regardless of distance travelled.

The blog is being created for the academic purposes as requested by the respectful lecturer of the subject, Dr Nur Naha. Furthermore, I consider this as a great way to ensure students are more clear on what has been taught in the class.
